VIDNOJE (FIBA U21 World Championship for Women) – Hungary led for most of the game but not when it mattered as Belgium came from 11 points down in the second half to win 73-64.
A pair of Katalin Honti free throws gave the Hungarians a 55-44 lead with 16 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but Ellen Lauwers three-pointer with 5:45 left in the game tie the contest at 59-59.
And Sara Leemans’ lay-up capped the 19-4 run to leave the Belgians ahead at 63-59.
Rita Kollo’s jump shot closed the gap to 63-61 for Hungary, but Leemans, one of her country’s finest performers in this tournament, stretched the lead to 66-61 with 2:07 to go and Belgium ended up prevailing by nine.
Leemans had 27 points and eight rebounds for the winners with Marjorie Carpreaux scoing 19 and dishing out nine assists.
Dora Horti scored 15 and pulled down 17 rebounds in defeat.
