VIDNOJE (FIBA U21 World Championship for Women) – Kalisha Keane poured in 26 points to lead Canada past Brazil on Saturday.
The two sides returned to the court at the FIBA U21 World Championship for Women following yesterday’s quarter-final defeats and the team from North America prevailed, 74-69.
Brazil lead 67-63 after an Izabela Morais lay-up with 4:24 remaining, but Natalie Doma’s jump shot started a 7-0 run for Canada that put them in front for good.
The contest wasn’t decided until the final minute.
Franciele Nascimiento scored to close the gap to 79-69, and Brazil twice had opportunities to go back in front after a Canadian turnover but Daiane Daleaste was off target with a jumper and with 22 seconds remaining, Jacqueline Silvestre turned the ball over.
Brazil were forced to foul, and Keane made two free throws for a 72-69 lead.
After a timeout by the South Americans, Joice De Souza missed a shot from the arc that would have brought them level and Keane added two more from the charity stripe for a five-point victory.
Canada will now play in the fifth/sixth place game on Sunday, while Brazil will battle for seventh place.
