ESP/HUN - Hungary win in OT, knock Spain out

Boxscores

VIDNOJE (FIBA U21 World Championship for Women) – Hungary edged Spain 79-76 in overtime to prevent them from reaching the quarter-finals and open the door for Brazil instead.

Spain, Japan and Brazil each finished with 1-4 records, but Brazil advanced with a superior goal difference.

The fact that Brazil advance will rub salt in the wound for Spain because it was the latter who prevailed in their season-opening encounter.

The Spanish looked doomed at the start of the fourth quarter but they fought back from an 11-point deficit to the tie the contest at 70-70.

In the extra five minutes, the Hungarians did just enough to win.

Spain put up their fair share of attempts from behind the arc, converting nine of 24 (37.5%).

Hungary were six of 14 (42.9%) from long range.

The Hungarians, meanwhile, were more determined to get shots closer to the basket and pick up fouls.

They were 25 of 34 (73.5%) at the stripe, compared to Spain’s 11 of 15 (73.3%).

Hungary finished their Group B campaign with a 3-2 record behind undefeated Team USA and second-top Australia.
